Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond 1671-1722

On 4th June 1668 [her father] Francis Brudenell [aged 14] and [her mother] Frances Savile [aged 10] were married. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Thomas Savile 1st Earl of Sussex and [her grandmother] Anne Villiers Countess Sussex. He the son of Robert Brudenell 2nd Earl Cardigan [aged 61] and Anna Savage Countess Cardigan. They were fourth cousin once removed.

In 1671 Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond was born to Francis Brudenell [aged 17] and Frances Savile [aged 13].

Before 1672 Henry Belasyse 2nd Baron Belasyse [aged 4] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond were married. They were sixth cousins.

On 16th May 1674 Thomas Lennard 1st Earl of Sussex [aged 20] and [her illegitimate sister-in-law] Anne Fitzroy Countess Sussex [aged 13] were married at Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map]. She the illegitmate daughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 43] and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland [aged 33]. They were first cousin once removed.

On 6th February 1677 Edward Lee 1st Earl Lichfield [aged 14] and [her illegitimate sister-in-law] Charlotte Fitzroy Countess Lichfield [aged 12] were married. She by marriage Countess Lichfield. She the illegitmate daughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 46] and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland [aged 36]. He the son of Francis Lee 4th Baronet and Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey. They were third cousins.

In 1679 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Charles Fitzroy 1st Duke Southampton 2nd Duke Cleveland [aged 16] and Mary Wood Duchess Southampton [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Duchess Southampton. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 48] and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland [aged 38].

In March 1686 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] George Fitzroy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 20] and Catherine Wheatley were married. Soon after the marriage Northumberland and his brother, Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton [aged 22], allegedly attempted to privately convey her abroad to an English convent in Ghent [Map], Belgium. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland [aged 45].

On 10th September 1689 John Belasyse 1st Baron Belasyse [aged 75] died. His grandson [her husband] Henry [aged 22] succeeded 2nd Baron Belasyse of Worlaby in Lincolnshire. Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 18] by marriage Viscountess Ipswich.

On 26th August 1691 [her husband] Henry Belasyse 2nd Baron Belasyse [aged 24] died. Baron Belasyse of Worlaby in Lincolnshire extinct.

On 8th January 1692 Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 19] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Duchess Richmond. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland and Louise Kéroualle 1st Duchess Portsmouth [aged 42].

After 12th September 1692 [her brother-in-law] Charles Livingston 2nd Earl of Newburgh and [her sister] Frances Brudenell Countess Newburgh were married. She by marriage Countess of Newburgh. He the son of James Livingston 1st Earl Newburgh and Catherine Howard Countess Newburgh. They were fourth cousins.

In 1694 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Charles Fitzroy 1st Duke Southampton 2nd Duke Cleveland [aged 31] and Anne Pulteney Duchess of Southampton and Cleveland [aged 30] were married. She by marriage Duchess Southampton. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland [aged 53].

On 17th April 1694 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Charles Beauclerk 1st Duke St Albans [aged 23] and Diana Vere Duchess St Albans [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Duchess St Albans. She the daughter of Aubrey de Vere 20th Earl of Oxford [aged 67] and Diana Kirke Countess of Oxford. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland and Nell Gwyn.

On 24th December 1694 [her daughter] Louisa Lennox Countess Berkeley was born to [her husband] Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 22] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 23]. She a granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 13th February 1711 her sixth cousin James Berkeley 3rd Earl Berkeley, son of Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley and Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley, and had issue.

In May 1695 [her brother-in-law] Richard Bellew 3rd Baron Bellew and [her sister] Frances Brudenell Countess Newburgh were married.

On 6th June 1695 [her mother] Frances Savile [aged 37] died.

In 1698 [her father] Francis Brudenell [aged 44] died.

On 18th May 1701 [her son] Charles Lennox 2nd Duke Richmond was born to [her husband] Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 28] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 30]. He a grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 4th December 1719 Sarah Cadogan Duchess Richmond, daughter of William Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan and Margaret Cecilia Munter Countess Cadogan, and had issue.

On 24th June 1703 [her daughter] Anne Lennox Countess Albermarle was born to [her husband] Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 30] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 32]. She a granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 21st February 1722 William Anne Keppel 2nd Earl Albermarle, son of Arnold Keppel 1st Earl Albermarle and Geertruid Johanna Quirina Van Der Duyn Countess Albermarle, and had issue.

On 18th February 1705 [her brother-in-law] Richard Molyneux 5th Viscount Molyneux [aged 25] and [her half-sister] Mary Brudenell Viscountess Molyneux [aged 22] were married. They were fifth cousins.

On 15th May 1707 [her brother] George Brudenell 3rd Earl Cardigan [aged 21] and [her sister-in-law] Elizabeth Bruce 3rd Countess Cardigan [aged 18] were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. She by marriage Countess Cardigan. She the daughter of Thomas Bruce 3rd Earl Elgin 2nd Earl Ailesbury [aged 51] and Elizabeth Seymour Countess Elgin and Ailesbury. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

On 13th February 1711 [her son-in-law] James Berkeley 3rd Earl Berkeley [aged 31] and Louisa Lennox Countess Berkeley [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Countess Berkeley. She the daughter of Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 38] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 40]. He the son of Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley and Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley [aged 57]. They were sixth cousins. She a granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 22nd December 1713 Thomas Clifford Earl Newburgh [aged 26] and [her niece] Charlotte Livingstone 3rd Countess Newburgh [aged 19] were married. He by marriage Earl of Newburgh. She the daughter of [her former brother-in-law] Charles Livingston 2nd Earl of Newburgh and [her sister] Frances Brudenell Countess Newburgh.

On 15th January 1716 Elizabeth Berkeley was born to James Berkeley 3rd Earl Berkeley [aged 36] and Louisa Lennox Countess Berkeley [aged 21]. Louisa Lennox Countess Berkeley died in childbirth She a great granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 4th December 1719 Charles Lennox 2nd Duke Richmond [aged 18] and Sarah Cadogan Duchess Richmond [aged 14] were married at The Hague. He was, apparently, forced into the marriage to pay off his, or his father's debts since she brought a considerable dowry. She the daughter of William Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 47] and Margaret Cecilia Munter Countess Cadogan. He the son of Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 47] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 48].

On 21st February 1722 [her son-in-law] William Anne Keppel 2nd Earl Albermarle [aged 19] and Anne Lennox Countess Albermarle [aged 18] were married at Caversham, Reading. She by marriage Countess Albermarle. She the daughter of Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 49] and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 51]. He the son of Arnold Keppel 1st Earl Albermarle and Geertruid Johanna Quirina Van Der Duyn Countess Albermarle.

On 9th December 1722 Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond [aged 51] died.

On 27th May 1723 [her former husband] Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond [aged 50] died. His son Charles [aged 22] succeeded 2nd Duke Richmond, 2nd Earl March, 2nd Baron Settrington. Sarah Cadogan Duchess Richmond [aged 17] by marriage Duchess Richmond.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. I believe my husband replaced a great deal of the original furniture at Deene [Map] with more modern examples, but many valuable old pieces still remain. The pictures are very beautiful, including a priceless Vandyke representing Queen Henrietta Maria, in the happy days of her early married life, as a regal, gracious figure arrayed in shimmering satin. There is a lovely portrait of Louise de Keroualle and her son, the Duke of Richmond, who married a Brudenell, and there are many examples of Lely, Sir Joshua Reynolds and other eighteenth- and nineteenth-century artists. One painting by Sant represents the Prince Consort and the Royal children listening to the account of the Charge of the Light Brigade by Lord Cardigan, and there are also some interesting pictures of hunting-field incidents, depicting Cardigan and his friends on their favourite mounts.
