Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn 1493-1548

On 24th March 1493 William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn was born to Cuthbert Cunningham 3rd Earl Glencairn [aged 16].

In or before 1515 William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 21] and Catherine Borthwick [aged 22] were married. He the son of Cuthbert Cunningham 3rd Earl Glencairn [aged 38].

On 4th September 1526 the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge was fought between supporters of Margaret Tudor Queen Scotland [aged 36], the king's mother, commanded by John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox [aged 36] and supporters of Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus [aged 37] commanded by James Hamilton 1st Earl Arran [aged 51], over who would have control over King James V of Scotland [aged 14] in his minority.

John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox was killed possibly after surrendering. His son Matthew [aged 9] succeeded 4th Earl Lennox.

William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 33] was captured.

After 17th January 1528 [his former wife] Catherine Borthwick [deceased] died.

Around 1530 Alexander Cunningham 5th Earl Glencairn and Janet Hamilton Countess Glencairn [aged 15] were married. She the daughter of James Hamilton 1st Earl Arran and Elizabeth Home Countess Arran. He the son of William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 36] and Catherine Borthwick.

On 23rd May 1541 [his father] Cuthbert Cunningham 3rd Earl Glencairn [aged 64] died. His son William [aged 48] succeeded 4th Earl Glencairn.

On 24th November 1542 Thomas Wharton 1st Baron Wharton [aged 47] commanded the English forces at Battle of Solway Moss at Solway Moss, Cumberland [Map]. John Thynne [aged 27] fought. Of the Scottish army Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming [aged 48], Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis [aged 27] and Laurence Oliphant 3rd Lord Oliphant fought.

William Graham 3rd Earl Menteith [aged 42] was captured. He was ransomed in 1453.

William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 49] was captured and committed to the custody of Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk [aged 69]. He was released on payment of a ransom of a thousand pounds and subscribing by his own hand to support Henry VIII's [aged 51] project of a marriage between the young King Edward VI of England and Ireland [aged 5] and the Mary Queen of Scots.

Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming was captured.

Around 24th May 1544 the Second Battle of Glasgow was fought between James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran [aged 28], who opposed a marriage between King Edward VI of England and Ireland [aged 6] and Mary Queen of Scots [aged 1], and an army of James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran who supported the marriage. and William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 51]

[his son] Andrew Cunningham was killed.

In March 1548 William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn [aged 54] died. His son Alexander succeeded 5th Earl Glencairn. Janet Hamilton Countess Glencairn [aged 33] by marriage Countess Glencairn.

[his son] Andrew Cunningham was born to William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn and Catherine Borthwick.

[his son] Alexander Cunningham 5th Earl Glencairn was born to William Cunningham 4th Earl Glencairn and Catherine Borthwick. He married 1530 Janet Hamilton Countess Glencairn, daughter of James Hamilton 1st Earl Arran and Elizabeth Home Countess Arran, and had issue.
