George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough 1739-1817

On 23rd May 1732 [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 25] and [his mother] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess of Sunderland. He the son of [his grandfather] Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and [his grandmother] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland.

On 26th January 1739 George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough was born to Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 32] and Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 26].

On 23rd March 1756 [his brother-in-law] Henry Herbert 10th Earl Pembroke 7th Earl Montgomery [aged 21] and [his sister] Elizabeth Spencer Countess Pembroke and Montgomery [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke, Countess Montgomery. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 49] and [his mother] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 43]. He the son of Henry Herbert 6th Earl Montgomery 9th Earl Pembroke and Mary Fitzwilliam Countess Pembroke and Montgomery [aged 48]. They were fourth cousin twice removed.

On 8th September 1757 [his brother-in-law] Frederick St John 3rd Viscount St John 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke [aged 24] and [his sister] Diana Spencer Viscountess St John and Bolingbroke [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Viscountess St John, Viscountess Bolingbroke. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 50] and [his mother] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 44].

On 20th October 1758 [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 51] died. His son George [aged 19] succeeded 4th Duke Marlborough, 4th Marquess of Blandford, 4th Earl of Marlborough, 4th Baron Churchill of Sandridge in Hertfordshire, 6th Earl of Sunderland, 8th Baron Spencer Wormleighton.

On 7th October 1761 [his mother] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 48] died.

In 1762 George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 22] and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Duchess Marlborough. She the daughter of John Russell 4th Duke Bedford [aged 51] and Gertrude Leveson-Gower Duchess Bedford. He the son of Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough and Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough. They were fourth cousins.

In 1763 [his daughter] Caroline Spencer Viscountess Clifden was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 23] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 19]. She married 10th March 1792 Henry Agar 2nd Viscount Clifden, son of James Agar aka Agar-Ellis 1st Viscount Clifden, and had issue.

In 1764 [his daughter] Elizabeth Spencer was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 24] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 20].

On 6th March 1766 [his son] George Spencer-Churchill 5th Duke of Marlborough was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 27] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 23]. He married 15th September 1791 Susan Stewart Duchess of Marlborough, daughter of John Stewart 7th Earl Galloway and Anne Dashwood Countess Galloway, and had issue.

In 1768 George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 28] was appointed 588th Knight of the Garter by King George III of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 29].

On 12th March 1768 [his brother-in-law] Topham Beauclerk [aged 28] and [his sister] Diana Spencer Viscountess St John and Bolingbroke [aged 33] were married. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough and [his mother] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough.

In 1769 [his daughter] Charlotte Spencer-Churchill was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 29] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 25].

In 1770 [his son] Henry John Spencer-Churchill was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 30] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 26].

In 1773 [his daughter] Anne Spencer-Churchill Countess Shaftesbury was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 33] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 29]. She married 1796 her third cousin twice removed Cropley Ashley-Cooper 6th Earl Shaftesbury, son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury and Mary Bouverie Countess Shaftesbury, and had issue.

In 1774 [his daughter] Amelia Spencer-Churchill was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 34] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 30].

On 26th December 1779 [his son] Francis Almeric Spencer 1st Baron Churchill was born to George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 40] and [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 36]. He married 25th November 1800 his second cousin Frances Fitzroy Baroness Churchill Wychwood, daughter of Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton and Elizabeth Wrottesley Duchess Grafton, and had issue.

On 8th April 1787 [his nephew] George Augustus Herbert 11th Earl Pembroke 8th Earl Montgomery [aged 27] and [his niece] Elisabeth Beauclerk [aged 20] were married. He the son of [his brother-in-law] Henry Herbert 10th Earl Pembroke 7th Earl Montgomery [aged 52] and [his sister] Elizabeth Spencer Countess Pembroke and Montgomery [aged 50]. They were first cousins. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 15th September 1791 George Spencer-Churchill 5th Duke of Marlborough [aged 25] and Susan Stewart Duchess of Marlborough [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of John Stewart 7th Earl Galloway [aged 55] and Anne Dashwood Countess Galloway [aged 48]. He the son of George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 52] and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 48].

On 10th March 1792 [his son-in-law] Henry Agar 2nd Viscount Clifden [aged 31] and Caroline Spencer Viscountess Clifden [aged 29] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny. She the daughter of George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 53] and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 49].

In 1795 [his son] Henry John Spencer-Churchill [aged 25] died.

In 1796 [his son-in-law] Cropley Ashley-Cooper 6th Earl Shaftesbury [aged 27] and Anne Spencer-Churchill Countess Shaftesbury [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 56] and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 52]. He the son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper 4th Earl Shaftesbury and Mary Bouverie Countess Shaftesbury [aged 65]. They were third cousin twice removed.

On 25th November 1800 Francis Almeric Spencer 1st Baron Churchill [aged 20] and Frances Fitzroy Baroness Churchill Wychwood [aged 20] were married. She the daughter of Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton [aged 65] and Elizabeth Wrottesley Duchess Grafton [aged 55]. He the son of George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 61] and Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 57]. They were second cousins. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

In 1802 [his daughter] Charlotte Spencer-Churchill [aged 33] died.

On 25th January 1808 [his nephew] George Augustus Herbert 11th Earl Pembroke 8th Earl Montgomery [aged 48] and Yekaterina Semyonovna Vorontsova Countess Pembroke and Montgomery [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke, Countess Montgomery. The difference in their ages was 25 years. He the son of [his former brother-in-law] Henry Herbert 10th Earl Pembroke 7th Earl Montgomery and [his sister] Elizabeth Spencer Countess Pembroke and Montgomery [aged 70].

On 26th November 1811 [his wife] Caroline Russell Duchess of Marlborough [aged 68] died.

In 1812 [his daughter] Elizabeth Spencer [aged 48] died.

In 1813 [his daughter] Caroline Spencer Viscountess Clifden [aged 50] died at Blenheim Palace.

On 29th January 1817 George Spencer 4th Duke of Marlborough [aged 78] died. His son George [aged 50] succeeded 5th Duke Marlborough, 5th Marquess of Blandford, 5th Earl of Marlborough, 5th Baron Churchill of Sandridge in Hertfordshire, 7th Earl of Sunderland, 9th Baron Spencer Wormleighton. Susan Stewart Duchess of Marlborough [aged 49] by marriage Duchess Marlborough.

The Times. 1st February 1817. On Thursday at his seat at Blenheim, George Spencer, Duke of Marlborough, Marquis of Blandford [deceased], &c. His Grace was born the 26th January, 1739. He was found dead in his bed at 7 o'clock in the morning. He had for some time been in a very infirm state, though he had experienced very little severe indisposition. By his death there became vacant a blue riband of the Order of the Garter, the Lord Lieutenancy of Oxfordshire, the Rangership of Whichwood forest, and the High Stewardship of Oxford and Woodstock.
