Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes
Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. Written from the perspective of a burgher (bourgeois) rather than a monastery or royal court, the chronicle offers a rare lay viewpoint on high politics and warfare, reflecting how merchants, townspeople, and civic institutions experienced the turbulence of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its narrative style combines straightforward reporting of events with moral and civic observations, making it a valuable source for readers interested in medieval urban society, regional politics, and the lived experience of war and governance in pre-modern Europe.

Froissart Book 4 Chapter 73. [Around March 1396]. The earl marshal, the earl of Rutland [aged 23], and the English ambassadors remained for twenty-two days in Paris, where they were excellently well entertained by the king and his court: their negotiations were successful, and the marriage between the [her future husband] king of England [aged 29] and the princess Isabella [aged 6] was agreed on. She was betrothed and espoused by the earl marshal, as proxy for the king of England, and the lady, ever after, was styled queen of England. I was at the time told it was pleasant to see that, young as she was, she knew well how to act the queen. When this business was completed, and the different treaties signed and sealed, the ambassadors took their leave of the king and his court, and departed from Paris to Calais, on their return to England, where they were joyfully received by the king, the duke of Lancaster [aged 55], and the lords attached to the king's person and pleasures.
Chronicle of Adam of Usk [~1352-1430]. [4th November 1396]. And so, a matter for wonder, he [King Richard II] took to wife [Isabella Valois Queen Consort England [aged 6]] a child not yet seven years old, rejecting the daughter and heiress of the king of Aragon, though very fair and of marriageable years1, But why he chose this young child,—and though a child she was married to him at Calais with much outlay of money and show, they say was that, eager to pour forth his pent-up venom, he thought by help and favour of the king of France to destroy his enemies. Yet this in the end turned to the ruin of himself and his confederates, as will afterwards appear2.
Note 1. The actual age of Isabella of France was eight years. The marriage took place at Calais, on the 1st November, 1396. The daughter of the king of Aragon, referred to above, appears to have been Yolande [aged 15], daughter of John I. She married, in 1400, Louis II [aged 19], titular king of Naples and count of Provence, and thus became grandmother to Margaret of Anjou, the wife of [her nephew] Henry VI.
Note 2. The surrender by Richard, in 1393 and 1397, of Cherbourg and Brest, which were held in pawn of the king of Navarre and duke of Brittany, was most distasteful to the English. Men recalled the conquests of Edward III and their speedy loss, and had come to look upon even the givitig up of towns held in pledge as a national wrong. This, added to the French marriage, gave rise to various rumours of Richard's designs in favour of the French: among others, that Calais, too, was to be handed over to them. See the story of Richard's quarrel, on this score, with the duke of Gloucester, as told in the Chronique de la Tratson et Mort de Richart II, ed. B. Williams (English Hist. Soc.), 1846.
Life Charles VI by a Monk of St Denis [~1420]. Among all that was to be done, the king, with utmost diligence, intended to make the marriage of his firstborn daughter Lady Isabella [aged 6] and the King of England conspicuous and in his presence; having been prevailed upon by the king with strong prayers, he sent to him the Duke of Burgundy, his uncle, to inquire how this could be accomplished more advantageously and honourably. He, according to the custom of the firstborn, recommending his departure to blessed Denis, when he had reached Guînes, a town in Picardy, on the vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [15th August 1396], met the Counts of the Marshal and of Rutland [aged 23]; thence he encountered the prelates of the kingdom of England, and subsequently the Dukes of Lancaster [aged 56] and Gloucester [aged 41], the king's uncles, accompanied by five hundred knights and squires, who escorted him with musical instruments all the way to Calais.
Froissart Book 4 Chapter 92. 1397. The resentments of the citizens began to cool, and they offered to mediate between the [her husband] king [aged 29] and the duke of Lancaster [aged 56], who was mightily angered by the murder of his brother [aged 41]. He bethought himself, however, that as his nephew was married to the daughter [aged 7] of the king of France [aged 28], should he wage war against king Richard, his two daughters married in Castille and Portugal might suffer for it, from the French carrying a war into those countries. The duke was beside forced to change his mind, whether he would or not, from the solicitations of the citizens of London and some of the English prelates, who had been the mediators between the king and his uncles. The king obtained peace, on promising from that day forward to be solely guided by the advice of the duke of Lancaster, engaging never to do anything without first consulting him. The promise, however, he paid not any regard to, but followed the counsels of the rash and evil-minded, for which hereafter he severely suffered, as shall be related in this history. Thus did the king of England gain peace from his uncles for the murder of the duke of Gloucester, and now governed more fiercely than before. He went with his state to Pleshy [Map] in Essex, which had belonged to his uncle of Gloucester, and should have descended to his son Humphrey [aged 16] as heir to his father; but the king took possession of it, for it is the rule in England for the king to have the wardship of all children who have lost their fathers, and are under twenty-one years of age at which period their estates are restored to them. King Richard took his cousin Humphrey of Gloucester in ward, appropriating all his possessions to his own profit. He made him live with him, and the duchess [aged 31] and her two daughters with the queen.

Froissart Book 4 Chapter 93. 1398. Peter d'Ailly, bishop of Cambray, was not long in making preparations for his journey, and set out on his embassy to Rome and Avignon, to declare the engagements the emperor and king of France had entered into. The king of France sent ambassadors to his son-in-law, the [her husband] king of England [aged 30], to acquaint him with what had been done, that he might unite in the same opinion. King Richard received the ambassadors with joy: and when he learnt the object of their mission, which was, to entreat he would remain neuter, if he could not prevail on his subjects to unite with France and Germany, in case the two popes refused compliance, replied he would so manage that his kingdom should act in the matter as he pleased. This he instantly promised, to the great joy of the ambassadors. After they had staid with the king and queen [aged 8] of England as long as they had chosen, they took leave and returned to Paris by Boulogne, and related all that had passed to the king and council. This was very agreeable to the king, and affairs remained in this state some time.
On 30th September 1399 King Henry IV of England [aged 32] became King of England usurping the throne of his cousin [her husband] Richard II [aged 32] and Richard's heir, the seven year old Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl of March [aged 7] who was descended from Edward III's second son Lionel of Antwerp Duke of Clarence. This second usurption was to have far reaching consequences since it subsequently became the descent by which the House of York claimed precedence over the House of Lancaster being one of the causes of the Wars of the Roses. Duke Lancaster, Duke of Hereford, Earl Derby, Earl Lancaster and Earl of Leicester merged with the Crown.

Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster [aged 8] de jure Heir to the Throne of England since he was descended from Philippa Plantagenet Countess March 2nd Countess Ulster the daughter of Lionel of Antwerp 1st Duke of Clarence. The new King Henry IV [aged 32] ignored his claim. Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl March 7th Earl of Ulster and his brother Roger Mortimer [aged 6] were imprisoned in Windsor and Berkhamstead castles respectively; they were treated well.
